The best CV and cover letter tools in Norway in 2026
Which tool is best for writing a CV and cover letter in Norway? It depends on what you need. If you want your CV and cover letter rewritten for each job ad, in Norwegian or English, Selja and JobStep are the most direct choices. If looks matter most, Canva is strong. If you need a free and plain layout, Europass, Word or Google Docs will do. Here we compare the tools on price, Norwegian language, ATS, templates and whether they stick to your own information. Selja is the service behind this page, so we stick to what each service says about itself. Prices checked in October 2026.

In short: which tool suits whom?
No single tool is best for everyone. The key question is whether you want help with the content, meaning what your CV and cover letter actually say, or only with how they look. A nice layout does little if the text does not answer what the job ad asks for.
- Selja: a CV and cover letter tailored to a specific job ad, in Norwegian or English, with a dedicated ATS template. Never adds experience you do not have.
- JobStep: free CV score, CV builder and templates, plus tailoring of CVs and cover letters on paid plans. Norwegian website, headquartered in Switzerland.
- Jobseeker: templates for CVs and cover letters, job listings and an overview of your applications for a fixed price.
- CareerBoom: CVs and cover letters tailored to the job, and a separate plan that applies for jobs automatically on your behalf.
- Canva: hundreds of free design templates and free form editing. Strong on looks, weaker on content.
- Kickresume and Zety: international CV builders with templates and CV checks, but no Norwegian website.
- Europass, Word and Google Docs: free, but you write and tailor everything yourself.
How we compared the tools
We read the websites and pricing pages of each service in October 2026 and only included what they state themselves. We have not tested every feature of every tool, and we do not give scores. Prices can change, so check the pricing page before you buy.
These are the criteria we think matter most for a job seeker in Norway:
- Norwegian: is the service available in Norwegian, and can it write a CV and cover letter in Norwegian?
- Tailoring: can the tool read a job ad and adapt your CV and cover letter to it?
- ATS: is the document built so that applicant tracking systems read it correctly? Read more in our guide to an ATS-friendly CV.
- Templates and PDF: how many templates are there, and can you download a PDF?
- Price in Norwegian kroner, renewal terms and whether there is a free version.
- Honesty: does the tool stick to your information, or does it add things you have not done?
Selja
Selja is built for the Norwegian job market. You paste in a job ad, as a link or text, and get a professional, ATS-friendly CV and cover letter tailored to the role in under a minute. The CV you already have, as a PDF, is used as the starting point. A job ad in English gives you a CV and cover letter in English.
Selja never adds experience or skills you do not have. If the ad asks for something that is not in your CV, Selja asks you about it and only uses what you confirm. You get a dedicated ATS template that applicant tracking systems read correctly, several templates and colours, editing and PDF download.
For free and without an account, you get a CV score, an ATS score and tools such as a salary check based on figures from Statistics Norway, an hourly wage calculator and a career quiz. The CV and cover letter themselves require Pro, which costs 249 kr a month, 135 kr a month when paid quarterly or 99 kr a month when paid yearly. Premium adds interview practice and a LinkedIn check. The weakness is that you cannot build a full CV for free.
JobStep
JobStep has a Norwegian website and is headquartered in Switzerland, with data stored in Europe. The free plan includes a CV score, the option to build a CV, all templates and an overview of your applications. Paid plans let you tailor your CV to jobs, create cover letters and download as much as you like. According to JobStep, you paste in the job ad or link, the letter is tailored, and you can edit everything before you export. PDF is the standard format.
JobStep costs 299 kr a month when paid monthly and 149 kr a month when paid quarterly. The service also sends weekly job suggestions. JobStep is a good fit if you want to build a CV for free and see a score before you pay. We have written a separate comparison: Selja or JobStep.
Jobseeker
Jobseeker is available in Norwegian and many other languages. You fill in the fields step by step, choose a template and download your CV or cover letter as a PDF. The service also has job listings and an overview of your applications.
Jobseeker has one price for all features: 249 kr a month, 558 kr a quarter or 1,488 kr a year. You can try it for 14 days for 9.99 kr, and the subscription renews automatically. The pages we looked at focus mostly on tidy templates and a simple form, not on reading the job ad for you.
CareerBoom
CareerBoom has a Norwegian website with prices in kroner. The free plan allows up to 3 CVs and 3 cover letters, and one job tailoring per month for each. The manual package gives unlimited tailoring, all templates, analysis, translation into other languages and download as PDF and Word. The list price was 279 kr a month when we checked, with discounts for longer periods.
What sets CareerBoom apart is a plan that applies for jobs automatically on your behalf, with 100 applications a month at a list price of 559 kr a month. The examples on its website are mostly large American employers. CareerBoom suits you if you want to send many applications and are comfortable with a service applying for you.
Canva
Canva is a design tool available in Norwegian with hundreds of free CV templates. You drag and drop elements, change colours and fonts and download as PDF, JPG or PNG. The basic version is free, and Canva Pro costs 1,600 kr a year.
Canva is strong when looks matter, for example in creative fields. Its CV page mentions neither ATS nor checking against a job ad, so you write and tailor the content yourself. Layouts with several columns, icons and text boxes can be harder for applicant tracking systems to read, so choose a simple template if you are applying through such a system.
Kickresume and Zety
Kickresume and Zety are international CV builders without a Norwegian website. Kickresume is available in English, German and Spanish among others, and Zety in English and six other languages.
Kickresume has a free plan with 4 basic templates and unlimited downloads. The paid plan costs 24 euros a month, 18 euros a month when paid quarterly or 8 euros a month when paid yearly, and gives you more than 40 templates, a writing assistant that can build a CV from the job ad, and an ATS check. Students with an ISIC card can get the paid plan for free.
Zety lets you build a CV for free, but the free version only downloads a plain text file. Pro starts with a 14 day trial for 1.95 dollars and then renews at 25.95 dollars every four weeks. The annual plan costs 71.40 dollars. Both work best when you are applying for jobs in English.
Free: Europass, Word and Google Docs
Norway's public job site arbeidsplassen.no closed its CV service on 1 October 2025 and now points to Europass instead. Europass is a free tool from the EU with a Norwegian website, where you can create a CV and cover letter using fixed templates.
Word and Google Docs are still good choices if you want full control. Google Docs is free with a Google account, and both can save as PDF. The downside is that all the work is yours: you have to read the ad, find the keywords and rewrite your CV and cover letter for every job. Our guides on how to write a CV and how to write a cover letter show you how.

Which one should you choose?
If you are applying for many jobs in Norway and want each CV and cover letter to match the ad, a tool that reads the ad for you pays off. Selja and JobStep both do this in Norwegian. The differences lie in price, the free version and how they handle words from the ad that are not in your CV. If you would rather use a chatbot, read Selja or ChatGPT.
If you are applying for a job where looks count, Canva may be right, but check that the text can be read by tracking systems. If you have time and want to spend as little as possible, Europass or Google Docs is a fine place to start. Whatever you choose, you can check the result for free with CV score and test your CV against a job ad with ATS score.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best CV tool in Norway?
It depends on your needs. For a CV and cover letter tailored to a specific job ad in Norwegian, Selja and JobStep are the most direct choices. For design, Canva is strong, and for a free layout, Europass, Word or Google Docs will do. Look for Norwegian language support, ATS-friendly templates, PDF export and whether the tool sticks to your own information.
Is there a free CV tool in Norwegian?
Yes. Europass is free and available in Norwegian, Canva has free templates in Norwegian, and JobStep and CareerBoom have free plans with limits. With Selja you get a free CV score and ATS score without an account, but the CV and cover letter themselves require Pro.
Are Canva CV templates ATS-friendly?
Canva does not say so on its CV page. Simple templates with one column and standard headings are usually read best by applicant tracking systems, while graphics, text boxes and several columns can cause problems. You can test a finished CV against a job with an ATS check.
What happened to the CV service on arbeidsplassen.no?
arbeidsplassen.no closed its CV service on 1 October 2025 and recommends Europass instead, which is free. If you are being followed up by NAV, your CV is still available at nav.no/min-cv.
Can I use ChatGPT instead of a CV tool?
Yes, for wording and feedback. But then you have to handle the layout, the PDF, the keywords from the ad and checking that everything is true yourself. We compare the two in a separate article on Selja or ChatGPT.
